Ottawa Supports Locked-Out Taxi Drivers

Ottawa, ON – The Workers Action Group of Solidarity Against Austerity wants to express our solidarity and support for the hundreds of local taxi drivers who have been recently locked out by their employer.  We believe the attacks and smears against locked out drivers have gone too far, and we are calling on all taxi users and driver supporters across the city to join us for a support rally on Friday. Solidarity Against Austerity supports locked out Ottawa taxi drivers

Ottawa (Unceded Algonquin Territory) — Solidarity Against Austerity wants to express our solidarity and support for the hundreds of local taxi drivers who have been recently locked out by their employer.  Coventry Connections is the near-monopoly private company that, with City of Ottawa authorization, dominates our local taxi industry – including the drivers.  Coventry locked out the Airport taxi drivers on August 11 following a breakdown in contract negotiations, and they followed this with a second lockout of Capital drivers (Blue Line and Capital are both owned by Coventry) on August 25.   Read More

Canada is one of the major destinations of migrant workers from many countries, including the Philippines. On April 1, the Canadian government initiated the criminalization and mass deportation of temporary foreign workers (TFWs).  This shows the vulnerability of TFWs as the ultimate cheap and disposable workforce.  Forgotten in the heated public debate is the real reason why employers are hiring TFWs and the undeniable rise in precarious work for workers in Canada and in the world. Anti-austerity activists to launch “Solidarity Info-Picket” at CBC building in Ottawa, oppose funding cuts

PHOTO OP:  Activists, trade unionists and supporters of public broadcasting associated with Solidarity Against Austerity will unfurl “Stop the Cuts” banners and launch a mass leaflet action and information picket in front of the CBC building in Ottawa to express broad social opposition to the devastating April 10 announcement of radical funding and job cuts at CBC.  Leaflets will be inviting participation in the mass march and demonstration against austerity planned for downtown Ottawa on Thursday, May 1st (May Day).  Denis Lemelin, National President of CUPW, will also attend to express solidarity with CBC workers.
